Finding the right fit

Choosing a community living environment can be one of the most difficult decisions you'll ever have to make. With so many facilities, how do you know you'll select the one that's right for you?

The first step is to make a list of the facilities in the area, advises AARP.

Call each facility and request for a brochure, price list and floor plans.

If you are still interested after reviewing the brochure, schedule a tour. During your visit, pay attention to how you feel and what is going on around you. Attend a scheduled activity and eat at least one meal in the dining room. Plan to spend some time with residents and staff.

Brochures might only discuss fees in a general way, so it is important that you understand all the costs and expected payment methods. Some facilities, like The View, charge a flat rate, while others offer a choice of service levels or complicated a la carte pricing.
